Lazy Fame

At work we’ve just been given our pay slips (woo!), and with them was the standard issue company diary. Each day that’s listed in the diary has a little “on this day” entry, with items such as “February 15 1971 – Decimalisation of coinage in Britain”, and important things like “April 3 1954 – Don Perry climbed a 20ft rope in under 2.8 seconds” (well done Don).
But what got me was the entry for January 3. “1754 – Joseph Black rediscovered carbon dioxide.”
Hang on. Rediscovered? I half expected January 2 to read “1754 – Joseph Black loses carbon dioxide”. The man’s getting famous for doing discovering something that’s been discovered before. That’s not special, that’s just lazy fame. Anyone can do that. I want next years diary to include “December 22 2005 – icabod rediscovers gravity on the way home from the pub.”
