In case you’ve not seen it already Forever9, the premier European 8-bit demoparty has been announced. This is known as a “Good Thing”. The party is taking place in March 2008, slap bang between my wife’s birthday and my own (in fact about a week before my birthday, and a few days after hers). It’s tempting to ask if she’d like to come along to the party as a birthday getaway, but I think I can accurately predict an answer in the negative – she doesn’t really do geekery.
But the party is announced and the UK contingent are already working on travel plans. Ideally we’ll be travelling to Vienna and getting a train to Trencin, as Gasman speaks German so it saves tricky situations where we have to ask for the location of a train station LOUD and S-L-O-W-L-Y! If that fails we’ll probably fly in to Bratislava and do the amusing foreigner thing of not knowing how to get out of the airport to somewhere useful.
So… who else is thinking of heading to the party?

In case anyone didn’t already notice, my wife and I are back from our honeymoon. We’ve actually been back a few days, with her returning to work on Monday, and me yesterday. We’ve been a little relaxed with the updates to fwuffybunny.com, but rest assured we’ll soon be putting up some photos from the wedding, and maybe some other stuff. A review of how it all went perhaps? Well maybe.
Of course when the wedding is long past we’ll need to decide what to do with the domain… details of the first baby-’bod perhaps? Coo, that’s a scary thought.

I just went and checked fwuffybunny.com – here’s what I saw:

Yes, it’s not long to go now. Still not entirely panicky… I’ve got a lot to do still, but it’s all coming together quite nicely. I’ve been writing out my notes for the speech I have to make. I think that’s perhaps the most daunting thing of the whole day. That or the dreaded “first dance” – neither Catherine nor I are really dancers, and usually only succumb to the dance floor having first succumbed to a large quantity of alcohol.
Now, I wonder what will happen when that timer reaches zero? All being well I won’t actually be online at the time to find out.

No, not a post about single people. Nor a post about dating. Nor a post about the sims-a-like game of the same name. Nor is it even a reference to the famous Cud band (“better make this one a single”).
No. This is simply a post to point out that the countdown to my wedding has dropped into single figures. Nine (9) days time. I’m thinking of starting to count the time down in hours, as at least it will seem a little further away (not that I’m not looking forward to it, as I am).
Of course, I will start to worry when the hour countdown approaches single figures. That’s when we realise that there’s something really important we’ve forgotten. Like booking the reception, or sending out the invites. Or, heaven forfend, advertising our wedding list. That would be a terrible thing to miss out.

I’ve been a bit quiet on my main site recently – not a good thing considering it’s a news site. But I have my reasons, one of which is that my wedding is now only 16 days away. That’s marginally more than two weeks, for those who are mathematically-challenged. It’s odd, I’ve still not gotten to the panic stage, and I think neither has Catherine. Most of the important things are sorted out already, and I’ve even managed to get through the dreaded stag-do with my hair and eyebrows intact. Actually I’m quite pleased that part of the wedding is over, as I now have time to relax and worry about the “main event”.
So. It’s 2 weeks and 2 days. Or 16 days. Or 386 hours. Or 23,169 minutes. Which it is all depends on how panicky you are. Me? I’m counting in days. For now.
Just before I head off to a meeting I thought I’d try out the in-development theme. It’s far from complete but I want to see how it renders in a variety of browsers, and the easiest way to do that is to activate it and use browsershots.org, a fantastic free service that provides you with screenshots of a webpage in a number of different browsers on different platforms. It can take some time (you can specify to wait up to four hours, which unless you’re in a real rush I’d suggest you do), but it’s very handy for seeing the oddities of some browsers.
When I’ve got the shots, I’ll put the old theme back.
For those who don’t know, my wife-to-be Catherine works in a museum – she’s something like the Curatorial Administrative Assistant (which is to say the general dogsbody) at the Fleet Air Arm museum. It’s quite an interesting job, and the museum is an interesting place to visit if you’re ever in the area.
Part of the thing that the museum does which isn’t on general display is related to archives, which includes archives of books (I imagine they have things like the complete Jane’s manuals and wotnot). Recently they came across a book with a Russian title and a Russian inscription inside the cover. This is where the favour comes in…

Above are two images (click on them for bigger versions), one of the cover of the book and one of the inscription inside the cover. It occurred to Catherine that I know a few people who speak/read Russian (as the ZX scene is very big in the East), so this is a request for a translation of the text in the above images. The cover is theoretically quite simple, but the inscription is hand-written and so is trickier to work out using Babelfish.
Any help would be much appreciated – just add a comment to this post with a translation.
